01.11.2011 » Ozil: "Ronaldo is one of the favorites to win the FIFA Balon d'Or"
FIFA and France Football will anounce the Balon d'Or award winner in January 2012, but Mesut Ozil has already commented on who are his favorites to win the trophy. Ozil said that if he could, he would give Iker Casillas the award, because he has been the best goalkeeper in the World over the last years. However and in a more realistic approach, Ozil expressed his wish of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo winning the award, even though he faces serious competition with Barcelona's Lionel Messi. The Argentinian won the award in the last 2 editions, succeeding the Portuguese player, who won it in 2009.
Mesut Ozil: "Iker Casillas is by far the best goalkeeper in the World for a few years already. If I was given the chance to choose the winner, I would award this trophy to Casillas.", said the German player, who hasn't been on his best form, judging by his last performances in Real Madrid. However, that doesn't stop him from believing on his team's success in winning the biggest trophies this season. Ozil: "Real Madrid is a mythical team and our objectives are always to win as most titles as possible, which includes the UEFA Champions League of course."
Regarding the FIFA's and France Football Balon d'Or award, Mesut Ozil acknowledges that his teammate in Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo, is one of the strongest candidates to "lift" the trophy in January. Ozil: "Cristiano Ronaldo really has a lot of chances to win the "Best Player of the World" award. I truly wish he can win it.", said Mesut Ozil, after having confessed that Iker Casillas would have been his first choice.
When asked to identify what's gives Real Madrid the edge over most of their opponents and most specifically, what will be their biggest advantage when facing Olympique Lyon this Wednesday, Ozil replied: "We're really strong combining and passing the ball, but we can also make the difference because of the tremendous talent some of our players have. We have several world-class players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kaká or Di María. We always look forward to score plenty of goals and we'll attempt to return to Madrid with the 3 points.", said Ozil when previewing the Merengues trip to Lyon, for their next UEFA Champions League fixture.
