Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus are among them?
The Champions League - Best goals in 2020/21:
The usual suspects...
At the moment, one of the favorites to win the Champions League is Manchester City. The club has gotten stronger, especially after having signed players like Rúben Dias in the beggining of the season. The Citizens have already failed three times in the quarterfinals in recent years: in 2018 against Liverpool, then in 2019 against Tottenham. Last season, they lost 3-1 to Olympique Lyon in the quarterfinals. In 2017 its was AS Monaco's turn to surprise them. The truth is the team's Champions League record has been a disaster according to Pep Guardiola, so they are betting everything on finally winning the competition this season.
Manchester City have played against FC Porto, Marseille and Olympiacos this season and they have easily secured the first place in their group. The odds for Manchester City's to go through to the next stage were as high as 28%.
Obviously, one of the absolute favorites to win the Champions League this season is again FC Bayern Munich. A year ago, we would hardly have thought FC Bayern could win the Champions League. However, a lot has happened since then. The turning point in last season was the replacement of the team's coach of Nikko Kovac for Hansi Flick.
Since that change, Bayern has had an incredible streak of success. Under Flick, the team not only won the German Championship but also the DFB-Pokal. And who can also forget the sensational 8-2 victory in the semi-finals against FC Barcelona? Or Kingsley's goal in the finals that secured the win for his team against Paris Saint-Germain? In this new season, Bayern seems to be picking up where they left off last year. In the Bundesliga, they are already leading the table with a 7-point lead over RB Leipzig. Robert Lewandowski is again the country's top striker and even seems to be in greater shape this season. And with Leroy Sané, Bayern has gained a stronger offense too. The odds for FC Bayern Munich to win the Champions League are as strong as 17%.
Two old powerhouses...
It has been five years since FC Barcelona last won the Champions League. We have to fly back to 2015 in order to remember the last time the Catalans lifted the trophy, when they defeated Juventus in the final by 3-1. Since then, the team has not had much luck. FC Barcelona's biggest advantage works also as their biggest disadvantage: the team's success depends entirely on Lionel Messi. If the Argentine superstar is out of shape or even a bit injured, the finals are out of the picture for this team. No fan can forget the drama that took place during summer when Messi wanted to leave FC Barcelona, but in the end, he was forced to stay...
With Messi staying in the club against his will and being already 33 years old, the club's chances for success are getting slimmer each season. No one can forget the embarrassing 2-8 loss against Bayern Munich during the finals last year, shocking the whole club to the core. Even though the club has not had much luck in the past years, it still holds has a few good players. Their chances to win the competition are around 13%...
In 2019, many fans thought that Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool had what it takes to win the Champions League and they were absolutely right. On the other hand, the Reds had a phenomenal season in the Premier League, but ended up failing that objective by a hair's breadth. The pressure before the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham was enormous as Jürgen Klopp had already lost six finals in a row and was being threatened with the stigma of becoming an eternal loser. Against the odds, Liverpool played the right way and brought home a 2-0 victory. For Liverpool, it was the first triumph in the Champions League in 14 years and a well-deserved reward for an outstanding season.
Last year, as the defending champions, Liverpool were once again one of the favorites to win the Champions League. Jürgen Klopp's team experienced a severe disappointment though, after losing 3-2 against Atletico Madrid. It is precisely because of this setback that Liverpool is expected to present themselves stronger this season. The team is well-trained and can develop into an enormous force at their home stadium. When playing at Anfield, Liverpool is almost unbeatable. And let's not forget the Klopp factor, who is regarded as the best coach in the game at the moment. In the group stages, Liverpool played against Ajax Amsterdam, Atalanta Bergamo, and FC Midtjylland. The Reds clinched the top spot of the group, with 4 wins in 6 games. The chances for the club winning the Champions League this season are around 7% at the moment.
Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund all share 5% chances of winning the Champions League as well, while Juventus, Chelsea, and PSG follow them with their chances fluctuating around 4%. What are your predictions about the big winner this season? Do you agree with our picks?
