30.10.2019 » Juventus 2-1 Genoa. A late penalty keeps the champions at the top
It's hard to understand why, but so far this season Juventus just doesn't look capable of securing a comfortable win... Tonight, the Bianconeri hosted Genoa at the Allianz Stadium and collected the 3 points following a tough 2-1 win. The Italian champions broke the deadlock in the 36th minute thanks to a goal from Bonucci, but then failed to hold on to the lead for too long and conceded the equalizer in the 40th minute, scored by Christian Kouamé. After the break, Genoa saw two of their players being sent off and it was hard to imagine them battling against a 11-man Juve with more than 30 minutes left on the clock. Surprisingly, however, Juventus struggled a lot to regain the lead and only scored the winner in the 95th minute of the game, when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a controversial penalty-kick.

No easy games this season...
Juventus completed their 5th straight game conceding at least one goal, but their problems are not exclusively in their defensive sector. Out of 17 games this season, including friendlies, the Vecchia Signora only managed to score more than 2 goals in a couple games (4 against Napoli and 3 against Bayer Leverkusen). In every other game, the Italian champions always scored 2 goals or less, a stat that needs to be looked at as a very worrying sign, especially for the more decisive stages of the season that are yet to come...
Tonight, the Bianconeri couldn't count with a key player in Maurizzio Sarri's strategy, as Miralem Pjanic was ruled out for this clash due to a muscle injury suffered in the game against Lecce. Gonzalo Higuaín had the same fate, as he also got injured in Juve's last game and should only be fit to play next week.
Things looked well under control for the Italian champions when the captain Leonardo Bonucci scored from a header, following a corner-kick taken by Bentancur from the left side. The 32-year old anticipated Radu at the near post and gave his side the first lead of the night, scoring his first goal of the season. However, this wasn't meant to be a calm night for the Bianconeri...
Ronaldo scores a late penalty...
A bad pass from Alex Sandro just 4 minutes after the hosts got in front, would surprisingly result in the visitors' goal. The first important point to consider is that a team like Juventus just can't lose possession in that area of the pitch, as it leaves the team exposed and at the mercy of whoever picks up the ball. Tonight, the ball fell to Christian Kouamé and the Ivorian forward was lucky to see his shot deflecting in his opposite shooting foot and tricking Giangluigi Buffon in the process.
The 1-1 scoreline remained untouched until the half-time break and shortly after both sides returned from the dressing rooms, Genoa saw Fernando Cassata booked for a second time with a yellow card and were forced to play with 10-men. As if that wasn't penalizing enough, the visitors then had Federico Marchetti booked with a straight red card due to an argument. We still hadn't reached the 60th minute of the game and Juventus found themselves in a great position to go after the winning goal against a 9-men side...
However, things just didn't go as expected and Maurizzio Sarri's men failed to create the clearcut chances they needed to beat their opponents and get into a more comfortable position in this game. In fact, the winning goal only arrived deep inside added time and following a very controversial call gave Juve a penalty-kick. Cristiano Ronaldo, who else, seems to have been slightly clipped by Sanabria inside Genoa's box and when the referee awarded the Vecchia Signora the penalty, the Portuguese star showed no mercy and gave Juventus the victory by making it 2-1 for the hosts. It's now 5 goals for Ronaldo in the Serie A...
