22.10.2019 » Juventus 2-1 Lokomotiv. Dybala revived Juve and rescued the win

Cristiano Ronaldo praying and worried about his situation in Juventus

Juventus nearly lost tonight's game against Lokomotiv Moscow, but a late reaction led by Paulo Dybala allowed the Italian champions to beat the Russians by 2-1 and hold the 1st place in Group D. Cristiano Ronaldo didn't score nor assist in this match...

The Allianz Arena hosted another Champions League game tonight, as Juventus clashed with Lokomotiv Moscow and collected the important 3 points to stay on top of Group D. The Bianconeri went through many challenges against the Russian side and even saw the visitors grabbing the lead deep inside the first half. The reaction only arrived inside the last 15 minutes of the second half, when Paulo Dybala stepped up to equalize from outside the box with a stunner and shortly deliver the winner off a rebound from a first strike by Alex Sandro. Cristiano Ronaldo didn't have many chances to score, but connected well with his teammates and will certainly return to the scoresheet in the upcoming days.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Lokomotiv:

The russians brought a bus to Turin...

There's no room for many errors in a competition like the Champions League and experienced clubs like Juventus are certainly aware of that. Maurizzio Sarri played a strong eleven against Lokomotiv tonight, with Szczesny in goal and a 4-men defense formed by Alex Sandro, Bonucci, De Ligt and Cuadrado. In midfield, Khedira, Matuidi and Pjanic organized the Italian champions' game, while Bentancur, Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo played upfront.

On the eve of the game, Ronaldo had already commented that Juventus were determined to finish their group in first place. With that in mind, the victory tonight was the only result the Bianconeri were interested in and it was expectable to see Lokomotiv playing very defensively in Turin. The Moscow side, who are leading their league in Russia in front of teams like Zenit and CSKA, knew exactly what to do in order to frustrate the Italian champions and increase their chances of pulling off an upset...

The hosts had a lot more ball movement than their opponents tonight and finished the game with 77% possession in their favor. Nevertheless, that didn't prevent Lokomotiv from surprising the Vecchia Signora in a quite casual play around the 30th minute, which started from a Russian goal-kick. The Portuguese João Mário found enough space to hit the target with a left-footed shot and saw the rebound falling to Miranchuk, who was already waiting for it in a privileged position. The Russian forward was clinical in front of goal put his side on the lead.

Dybala for the rescue!

Juventus' reaction wasn't exactly what everyone expected... The Bianconeri lacked creativity in attack and struggled a lot to create clear-cut chances. Maurizzio Sarri realized that and tried to grant his team a bit more dynamism and presence upfront, as he subbed off Sami Khedira for Higuaín right after the break. Shortly after and with Juventus still trailing by one, he risked even more by taking off Matuidi and sending in Rabiot. The hosts were desperate to score the equalizer but they weren't finding spaces to really threaten Guilherme in Lokomotiv's goal.

With the Russians's strategy of parking the bus in front of goal and Juventus proving to be incapable of breaking down their opponents tonight the way they planned prior to this game, it all came down to one man: Paulo Dybala. The Argentine star scored a real stunner in the 77th minute, curling his shot beyond Guilherme and throwing everyone off their seats at the Allianz Arena. It was his first goal in the Champions League this season and he wasn't done for the night just yet...

Just 2 minutes later, Dybala found himself in the right place at the right time and finished off a rebound from a first shot by Alex Sandro, beating Lokomotiv's goalkeeper for the second time on the night and giving Juventus their first lead in this game. That's the type of performance every Juventus fan hopes to see Dybala providing more regularly in the future and if he does manages to do it, he's going to shut up every critic he still has.
