10.07.2019 » Juventus on a mission to end Champions League drought
Juventus will head into the 2019/20 season eager to end their long wait to win the UEFA Champions League for the third time in their history. The Serie A club haven't claimed Europe's top trophy since beating Ajax on penalties in the final back in 1996. They have reached the final four times since then without success, a statistic that has frustrated everyone connected to the club. Juve were one of the favourites to win last season's competition, but they were knocked out in stunning fashion by Ajax at the quarter-final stage. Read on as we assess their chances of winning the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.
Juventus - Champions League runner-up kings
Ronaldo is key to Juventus chances
It was hoped that Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Turin would end Juve’s long wait to win the Champions League and the Portuguese star certainly did his best to make it happen.
He was quiet by his usual high standards during the group phase, but sprang into life in the round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid.
Ronaldo’s hat-trick in the second leg of that match-up helped Juve overcome a 2-0 deficit to set up the quarter-final clash with Ajax.
Juve were a popular pick amongst NJ betting tips ahead of the tie and looked on course for the last four after drawing 1-1 in the Netherlands.
However, the Dutch side recorded a 2-1 victory in Italy to send Ronaldo and Juve tumbling out of the competition.
Ronaldo scored both of Juve's goals against Ajax and he will undoubtedly be the key to their hopes in the competition next season.
The Sarri Factor
Under Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus won five Serie A titles and four Coppa Italias but that was not enough to keep him in a job.
Maurizio Sarri has been brought in as his replacement and his main brief will be to end Juve's Champions League drought.
The former Napoli boss led Chelsea to third in the Premier League and won the Europa League in his one season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
He now has the task of guiding Juve back to the top of the tree in Europe and there are plenty of reasons to believe he will achieve that goal.
Juve have already strengthened their squad significantly this summer, bringing in Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot on free transfers. With more new arrivals expected and Sarri likely to play Ronaldo more centrally next season, Juve look an excellent bet at odds of 9/1 to win the UEFA Champions League.
