19.05.2019 » Juventus 1-1 Atalanta. The Bianconeri say goodbye to their fans

It’s time to celebrate. To catch a breather from a rough season and enjoy the night as Juventus clinch their eighth straight Scudetto in Turin. Juventus and Atalanta settled for a point each in this weekend's game and there's only one game left in the league now...

The night wasn't that bad for either side, as Atalanta kept their Champion League spot alive with just one more game left in the Serie A and Juventus got to lift the Serie A trophy in front of their own fans. It really was a win-win situation for both the clubs for the night. While Atalanta jumped into third place in the Serie A table this Sunday following the 1-1 draw against Juventus, the home crowd got to say goodbye to Massimiliano Allegri in his final match in charge of the champions and also to veteran defender Andrea Barzagli, who appeared in Bianconero for the last time at the Allianz Stadium. Cristiano Ronaldo on the other hand, received the Serie A's best player award in his very first year in Italy.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Atalanta:

Atalanta was the better side in
the first half

Josip Ilicic's took advantage of the Vecchia Signora's mismanagement in the backline and helped Gian Piero Gasperini's side to take lead in the first half of the game. The goal was a special one, as Atalanta became the first Serie A team to reach the milestone of 100 goals in all 2018/19 competitions.

However, super-sub Mario Mandzukic came for the rescue to secure a point each, as the Croat met Juan Cuadrado's cross and scored in a nutmeg fashion, through the legs of the opposition goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini with ten minutes left to play.

Duvan Zapata had an incredible opportunity to double the lead, but goalkeeper Szczesny's solid saves near the bottom corner kept his side alive in the match with eight minutes remaining for the half to end.

The Turin side seemed to gain confidence and looked sharper in the opening stages of the second half, with João Cancelo going for the long-range effort, but still not able to level up the game. Somehow, that alerted Allegri to call on Mandzukic for Barzagli with half an hour on the clock.

Emotions were steaming high as retiring Barzagli broke into tears before being embraced by his teammates, hugged by his departing manager and his name being chanted across the stadium by the fans.

Szczesny managed to hold off Ilicic's deflected free-kick to keep the Vecchia Signora in the game, as Mandzukic finally levelled matters for the Bianconeri after timing his perfectly driven run to slide it through the back of the net in the 80th minute and create a nervy few minutes for the visitors.

Marten de Roon did face an opportunity to grab the late-winner for Atalanta during the stoppage time, but he wasted his shot wide being free on the right side of the box. That happened before substitute Federico Bernardeschi received a straight red card after a reckless sliding challenge on Musa Barrow – leaving his side into 10 men with a couple of minutes left in Turin.

However, the result elevated the Bergamo side to third in the table, level on 66 points with Inter Milan but ahead on head-to-head record.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side has their fate of qualifying for the Champions League in their own hands, and they certainly look forward to guarantee a top four spot if they beat Sassuolo in their final game of the season next weekend.

On the other hand, the Bianconeri reached 90 points, with one game remaining and celebrated a season full of a roller-coaster ride. To make the occasion more special, old friends like Gianluigi Buffon and Fernando Llorente and new signing Aaron Ramsey, were at the Juventus Stadium ahead of the Scudetto presentation ceremony.

Juventus, who have successfully captured and conquered an eighth successive Serie A title, announced this Friday that Massimiliano Allegri would leave at the end of the season.

The home crowd in Turin said goodbye to the Italian manager after five trophy-laden years, while veteran defender Andrea Barzagli left his final mark for the last time in the White and Black shirt at the Allianz Stadium, who will indeed be remembered as one of the greatest servants of the club and as one of Europe's elite defender.
