21.01.2019 » Juventus 3-0 Chievo. Easy win for the champions

Cristiano Ronaldo in Juventus 3-0 Chievo, in 2019

Juventus made easy work of Chievo this Monday night, as they hosted and beat the Gialloblu by three goals without response. Douglas Costa and Emre Can scored for the Italian champions in the first half, while Rugani sealed the deal later in the second half.

It was like a walk in the park for Juventus this Monday night, as the Italian champions welcomed Chievo in Turin and easily defeated them 3-0 in another Serie A fixture. With two goals in the first half and a third one near the end of the game, the truth is Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates didn't have to sweat much tonight, as Chievo never really threatened to cause an uspet at the Allianz Arena. Still unbeaten in Italy this season, Juventus have built a 9-point lead over Napoli which they hope to be enough to allow them to switch the focus to the Champions League game in a few weeks time.

Easy from the start

It was first against last in the Serie A and whenever this happens, we usually don't get to see big surprises. Nevertheless, it was always going to be a dangerous game for Juventus, as they were coming off a huge trip to Saudi Arabia in mid-week, where they've beaten AC Milan 1-0 in a competitive final. With that in mind, Massimiliano Allegri preferred to play it safe and rotated a total of 5 players in the starting lineup.

In goal, Szczesny saw Perin taking his place, while the back four was formed by Alex Sandro on the left, Chiellini and Rugani in the middle and Mattia De Sciglio on the right. Cancelo and Bonucci were rested here. In midfield, Matuidi had two new partners in crime this time around, as Bernardeschi and Emre Can replaced Pjanic and Bentancur. Finally and more upfront, Allegri didn't change his front three and relied on the partnership between Douglas Costa, Dybala and of course, Cristiano Ronaldo.

And it wouldn't take long for the Bianconeri to break the deadlock. The opener arrived around the 9th minute of the first half, in a great individual play from Douglas Costa. The former Bayern Munich winger picked up the ball near the halfway line, ran forward 20 or 30 meters and then struck the ball with power and precision to beat Chievo's goalkeeper for the first time on the night. Great goal from the Brazilian, his first this season!

Cristiano Ronaldo penalty-kick in Juventus vs Chievo in 2019

It just wasn't Ronaldo's night...

The second goal of the evening was the product of a great passing play, with Dybala showing off all his quality in the last third of the pitch. The Argentine received a pass from Douglas Costa still a few yards outside the box, decided to move the ball forward and capture everyone's attenttion just to find Emre Can completely unmarked in the middle and put him in a one-on-one situation against Chievo's goalkeeper. The 25-year old midfielder showed the typical German composure and extended the hosts lead to a 2-goal cushion.

In the second half and after already having had several good occasions to score, Cristiano Ronaldo was given the opportunity to also write his name in the scoresheet when Juventus earned a penalty-kick.

The Portuguese forward knew things weren't going his way tonight, but kept his focus and composure when stepping up to the penalty mark. His strike was strong and well placed, but unfortunately he saw Chievo's goakeeper, Sorrentino, flying to the right side in anticipation and blocking his shot. It was just wasn't meant to be, but we all know how strong Ronaldo is mentally and he'll surely get back on the horse in the next game.

The 3-0 came in around the 84th minute of the game, when a perfect cross from Bernardeschi on the left found Rugani completely forgotten and unmarked inside the box. The Italian defender had no trouble in heading the ball into the back of the net and Juventus were certainly happy to put the final nail in the coffin.
