07.11.2018 » Juventus 1-2 Manchester United. The unbeaten run comes to an end
It looked like Juventus had things wrapped up as tonight's game against Manchested United rushed to its end, but an unfortunate sequence of events led to a surprising comeback from José Mourinho's men, who left the Allianz Arena with a crucial 2-1 win. The Vecchia Signora grabbed the lead deep inside the second half in yet another truly spectacular goal from Cristiano Ronaldo, but no one could predict the hecatomb that would happen in the dying minutes of the match. Manchester United score the equaliser in the 86th minute following a well-taken free-kick from Juan Mata and then just 3 minutes later they completed the comeback from an own goal scored by Alex Sandro.

Ronaldo first goal for Juventus in the Champions League
What an ending! In the blink of an eye, what looked like a good victory turned into pure disaster, as Juventus suffered two late goals to gift Manchester United an away victory. It was a loss that should have never happened given how the game went and Juventus will have to analyze a lot of their mistakes to come back stronger in the future.
In the first half Juventus attacked aggressively but due to Manchester United's shape, they were forced to play a bit narrower than they wanted. Still, they moved the ball well without too much fuss and Rodrigo Bentacur was able to control the pace well. Man United were in the game as well and countered when the opportunity arose, but found it hard to link up in the final third. A shot from Khedira in the first half hit the post and it almost seemed inevitable that the Bianconeri would score soon. All in all, it was a rather uneventful half for United and the missed chances from Juve would prove to be fatal later on.
The second half would feature three goals, with the least important being the best of the bunch. Latching onto a trademark long ball from Leo Bonnuci, Ronaldo hit a first-time volley into the roof of the net. Not bad for his first goal in the Champions League in Juventus colors. He couldn't help himself as he peeled off in celebration against his former team, making sure to show his abs off as well. Following that goal, it's a shock that Juventus couldn't put the game away. Chance after chance went begging. Ronaldo himself could have had a couple assists in this one.
An unexpected comeback...
This matchup hinged on what was a poor move by Massimo Allegri to put Barzagli on and switch from the 3-5-2. Before, Juventus were able to stifle Man Utd in the center of the park, now with more space to roam, the English side got back into the game. It's something we've seen often, Allegri attempted to calm the game down with a defensive substitute, but it backfired as it allows the opponent to get more into the game.
In the end, however, it would be two set pieces that did them in. The first, a brilliant freekick from Juan Mata. The former Chelsea midfielder curled the ball past Szczesny with his sweet left foot. The second, more comedic as no one could clear the ball off the free kick and Alex Sandro inadvertantly put the ball into his own net.
A terrible loss but not one that should affect Juventus too much, as they still top the group and a win against Valencia will allow them to finish first. Nevertheless, it's still the kind of game we've seen Juventus lose in the UEFA Champions League in recent years, so Allegri needs to rectify that if he wants to win the Champions League this season.
