06.04.2016 » Wolfsburg 2-0 Real Madrid. The "remontada" awaits at the Bernabéu
We could start by saying that we have warned you for this outcome just a couple days ago in our match preview story, but there's just no point in doing so. Real Madrid were stunned by Wolfsburg 2-0 at the Volkswagen Arena this Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals first leg and must now focus all their energies in a memorable comeback in the return leg, scheduled for next Tuesday (April 12). The Germans played with more intensiy and got rewarded for it. Zidane barely changed his team from last Saturday's El Clasico against Barça (only switched Carvajal for Danilo), but his men didn't respond the way they should. The good news are that the Bernabéu will now have the last say...

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Wolfsburg:
Riding high off the famous victory in El Clasico, few would have expected this result. Real Madrid waltzed into Germany expecting to at the very least come away with a crucial away goal from the tie. Instead, the Merengues are flying back to Spain tails between their legs, after a shockingly bad performance away from home and a 0-2 deficit.
Casemiro, the hero from the weekend, was at fault for the opener. His foul in the box led to a well taken Ricardo Rodriguez penalty. The German side grew in confidence after the strike and doubled their lead with a tidy finish from Maximilian Arnold just outside the six-yard box.
There stood Madrid, down 0-2 and looking as disorganized as ever. It seems that every time the team begins to turn the corner, something holds them back from unleashing their full potential...
There was one difference however from the weekend and that was the absence of Dani Carvajal. With Danilo starting in his place, the gap in quality was significant. Not to put the entire loss on Danilo, but it's become increasingly apparent that he's not at the right level for Real Madrid currently. And he's far from the talent he seemed to be at FC Porto.
Fans may point to certain refereeing decisions as the reason behind the loss, but truthfully, Real Madrid struggled to break down Wolfsburg and paid the price one could expect to be charged with at this level.
"90 minutes in the Santiago Bernabeu is a long time" they say, and Real Madrid will have to prove it in the second leg as their only realistic chance of silverware hangs by a thread...
