08.03.2016 » Real Madrid 2-0 Roma. Mission accomplished at the Bernabéu!
The Merengues were very well placed to progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals ahead of tonight's second leg clash against AS Roma and they didn't disappoint their fans this time around, after securing a 2-0 win against an Italian side which proved once again not to be an easy nut to crack. Real Madrid may have went through another European game without conceding, but the visitors actually had some of the best chances to score in the game and failed to convert them one after another. Just like in Rome, it would be Cristiano Ronaldo striking the decisive blow in this game deep in the second half and scoring his 13th goal in the competition. A few minutes later, James Rodríguez set the final score in 2-0 and secured the ticket for the next round of the UEFA Champions League.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs AS Roma:
Real Madrid are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a 2-0 victory at home against a wasteful AS Roma team. Madrid go through 4-0 on aggregate, as goals from James Rodriguez and Cristiano Ronaldo (he also notched an assist) were enough to see Los Blancos through.
It was Ronaldo's 13th goal of the tournament, as he extended his lead at the top of the scoring charts. But it wasn't an easy game for Madrid at all, Roma were undone by some disastrious finishing from both Edin Dzeko and Mohammed Salah, as both attackers had clear chances that could have turned the game on its head and put Real Madrid into serious trouble.
While the end result will leave most Real Madrid fans happy, the hapless display at the back isn't a good sign as they head into the business end of the tournament. Captain Sergio Ramos was shaky at times today, unable to remain composed as he gave away the ball multiple times. Had the Italians finished better and it certainly would have been a far more nerve-racking tie for Real Madrid.
But if there is one bright spot, and it's really been the surprise of the season so far, it was Lucas Vazquez. The former Castilla man was brought back to the Capital with little fanfare, but he's truly made his mark on the team this seaon. And it was his addition to the game in the second half, in place of the recently-returned Gareth Bale, that would help yield the first goal.
Dribbling down the flank, Vazquez played a cross over to Ronaldo, who was then able to beat Kostas Manolas to the ball and finish past Wojciech Szczęsny. Soon after, it would be James Rodriguez's turn to get on the scoresheet, as he finsihed from a narrow angle after a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real Madrid would have a few more chances until the end, with Ronaldo in particular missing a sitter soon after. Nevertheless, they were able to hold on to the win and to another European clean sheet, thanks to a great display from Keylor Navas. The Merengues are now happy to go through and advance to the competition's next round.
With the Champions League truly being Real Madrid's last realistic shot at a title this season, the team must focus on shoring up the defense as bigger matches are surely on the horizon. The Spanish giants will now know their quarter-finals' opponent on next week's Friday, on March 18.
