27.11.2012 » Real Madrid 3-0 Alcoyano. The canteranos got the job done
Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo staying on the bench during the entire game, there were no surprises at the Santiago Bernabéu this Tuesday night, as Real Madrid defeated Alcoyano by 3-0. After having already won by 1-4 on the first leg (7-1 in aggregate), this time the Merengues only managed to secure the victory deep in the 2nd half, with goals from Angel Di María and Callejón (2). The Merengues will now have to wait for the 2nd leg of the Almería vs Celta de Vigo match, in order to know who will be their opponent at the last-16 round stage. What we know in advance though, is that a possible Real Madrid vs Barcelona clash in the Copa del Rey may only happen later in the competition, and only if both teams end up reaching the semi-finals. Those two leg "Clasicos" would take place in the last week of January 2013.
Real Madrid 3-0 Alcoyano goals and highlights:
As soon as it has been confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo was to start on the bench against Alcoyano, one could say that tonight's game immediatly lost a significant part of its interest. Nevertheless, the possibility of watching several Real Madrid canteranos in action (young players from Real Madrid Castilla and the club's youth formations), as well as the good chance of still seeing Ronaldo coming off the bench as a sub and still give his contribution in this game, were certainly good reasons to stay hooked to the match. Unfortunately, none of the Canteranos really impressed this Tuesday night and neither José Mourinho felt the need to bring Ronaldo into the game...
Alcoyano's resistance to Real Madrid's firepower has lasted until late in the second half, as the visitors managed to keep a clean sheet for roughly 70 minutes. Before the opening goal took place, the Merengues naturally dominated most of the ball possession and actually had the best goalscoring chances. Not that the same trend wouldn't keep on after the goals started to pop out, but with an unusual attacking trio composed by Callejón, Denis Cheryshev and Alvaro Morata upfront, Real Madrid seemed to always struggle at the task beat the last man from Alcoyano's defense. Things would only start changing after José Mourinho decided to bring on Angel Di María and Karim Benzema already during the 2nd half...
Angel Di María came in at the 61st minute, replacing the Russian talent Denis Cheryshev, while Benzema took Alvaro Morata's place, just a few minutes later (69th minute). A couple minutes after that second subsitution, Alcoyano conceded the first goal of the night and unsurprisingly, it was Di María who scored it, after an assist from Karim Benzema. The Argentinian winger picked up a low pass from the French striker with his right foot and found no problems to beat Alcoyano's goalkeeper by striking the ball into near the far post. The visitors got frustrated with the goal and their protests against the linesman's decision for not disallowing the play for offside, led them to be reduced to 10 men, as Selvas got shown the red card.
With 89 minutes on the clock, Mesut Ozil assisted Callejón for a 1-on-1 situation with a brilliant pass, and with only Alcoyano's goalkeeper in front of him, the Spanish winger didn't miss such a good opportunity to put his side two goals up. Real Madrid was far from having a good performance this Tuesday night, but at least the scoreline was more in line with what we had seen so far in this match.
Everyone was already preparing to go home, but there was still time for another goal and once again, scored by José Callejón. The 25-years old player, who by curiosity was born in Granada, ended up scoring a brace tonight, after being assisted by Angel Di María as added time was already being played. Callejón showed he had saved a lot of energy to still put at his team's disposal for the final minutes and after reaching the ball before Alcoyano's goalkeeper, he striked it with the tip of his toes, setting the final score into a fair 3-0. The Merengues will now start preparing next weekend's derby against Atletico Madrid, as they will look to cut distances not only to their opponents that night, but also to Barcelona, who still leads La Liga with 37 points.
